[Cask at Wenlock Arms, London] A pitch black beer with a bubbly brown head. The aroma is sweet with an acidic touch of roasted malt as well as light notes of chocolate. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of chocolate as well as light notes of diacethyl. The mouthfeel is very smooth.

Half pint on cask. Almost black body without any head. Not much aroma for a porter. Watered mouthfeel. Dark fruit and bitter chocolate in a rather dull sense of taste (The King’s Arms, Norwich 24.09.2006).

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 30 July) Colour is black with some ruby notes when seen through light, frothy beige head. Nose is roasted with chocolate, tobacco and wet ashes, a bit modest actually. Taste is roasted with chocolate and tobacco, some citrus as well. Some sweetness but mainly dry. Balanced bitterness in the finish. Medium body. Not very complex, but a nice porter. A long time ago the first cask conditioned porter I ever tasted was Salem Porter, which really was a revelation for me, so I still retain fond feelings about this beer.

Cask gravity dispense at Chequers, Wareside, Herts. Very dark brown/black, no head. Bit like an old ale, quite sour with prune fruit flavour. Some raisin. Quite a lot of flavour on the finish. A proper sour porter. Sour prune finish. Odd, but good to have. Bit of coffee throughout too.

Flat beer with a slight coffee tinge. Generally a dark version of a bitter in terms of both flavour and appearance.
