Pour is a murky brown with a small white head. Aroma is a lovley mustyness with faint hints of alcohol. Flavor is sweet candied sugar with a huge sourness. Lots of dark fruits and caramel round out this very sour beer. Almost reminds me of a Flemish sour ale.

2008-05-18, corked bottle at Ølfestival 2008, Århus, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Dark chestnut ciolor. Very mature aroma, oxydized malt, but almost fruity too, sweet, candy-like. Good mouthfeel, with an interesting oxydized malt flavor and caramel; bitterness almost absent, warming alcohol; it can become cloying. Peculiar.
2006-02-22, corked bottle, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Cloudy dark brown color; creamy head. Strong aroma, with malt, caramel, toffee, some fruitness and light cork; it shows a primordial complexity. The body is thin in the beginning, quite simple flavor (basically caramel supported by some sweetness) and the final is too much biting (alcohol) with some off-flavors; it also has a very light sourness, quite rare in the Unibroue beers. Much better when warm.
I expected more.

Dark redish brown with a rich head. Fruity aroma with notes of alcohol. Sweet, warming flavour with notes of liquorice. Will probably improve with age.

(Bottle 75 cl) Slightly hazy dark brown with a creamy, off-white head. Malty, roasted aroma with distinct notes of alcohol. Sweetish and roasted flavours with notes of caramel and dried fruits. Lovely fullness with a warming alcohol. No real bitterness. 041105

An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel and spices and herbs, but I can’t pick out the ingrediens. The flavor is sweet malty and very spicy, combined with notes of oranges, caramel, and hints of alcohol. The mouthfeel is quite carbonated.

Deep red body, medium light tan head, quickly dissipating with the vigor of soda fizz. Toasty aroma with hints of dark fruit and banana, spices, estery, with an ethanol kick. Rather tart body, sharp on the palate, with alcohol notes, cherry, and banana, in addition to cinnamon and other candied fruits. The esters and alcohol quickly hit the palate, with the fruits and toast hiding beneath. More flavorful than many of Unibroue’s beers, and quite good.

Well, I’m not terribly enthusiastic about this one. Actually, its not bad at all, but just makes me that much more impressed by the mastery of the Belgian brewers. This one has all the trappings of a good Belgian style, that strong yeasty, somewhat phenolic banana-ey nose with fruity notes of raisin and plum. But not without flaws, as a fuselly note is apparent. Pours dark reddish brown, undercarbonated with a small head. Flattened quickly in the glass. Medium sweet up front, with a little fruit, but quickly becoming dominated by alcoholic sting, and a peppery yeasty finish. Too rough, too raw, unintegrated. Its still decent, but just not up to the high standards the style demands.

Bottle. Dark brown-mahogony beer with a beige head. Sweet, fruity, yeasty malt aroma - grape and cherry over brown sugar. Very fruity flavor (again chery, and grape, with some cola). Sweet candy malts with a bit of spice. I usually don’t like Belgians that are this sweet, but it has some complexity and enough robust flavor to back it up. Should age well.
