Our flagship beer - the one Rob brewed first and still the beer we brew most of. Scapa Special is a classic pale ale with wide appeal. Ever so balanced, the skill that Rob has so well honed, this beer and biscuity malt upfront and delicate but ascending hops in the middle and end. Three malts and five hops - from Britain, Germany and the US - make Scapa Special a classic pale ale.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Pours a clear deep golden with an off-white head leaving a dicreet lacework. Good citrusy hop flavour. Medium body, fruity sweetness with a hint of caramel. A little late hops but never really bitter. 290911

Very fruity nose. Light mouth, a touch of lemonade and marmalade. Lots of nose, but very little bitterness. Very little backbone. Tons of hops in the beer. Mildly bitterness that abruptly finishes. Just amazed how lively the fruitiness is on this.

Bottled, from The Scottish Real Ale Shop, Kilmahog. Lightly hazy deep golden, rich head. Aroma of ripe fruit and hay. Mid sweet, fruity with light-medium body and soft mouthfeel. Autumnal flavours of ripe fruits and hay, light spicy bitterness. Tasty, well balanced and nicekly drinkable.

50cl bottle poured into my Scapa Special pint glass. It pours a golden orange with a fantastic head and steady carbonation. The nose has sweet malt and very herbacious hops. The taste has hay and a long zingy nettley finish. The palate is rich with a long refreshing finish. So, so drinkable.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Golden amber with an off-white head; very lively when first poured but settling quickly; biscuity aroma; thinish body, biscuity taste with some orange fruit; light hops to finish, but not enough to impress.

Dull bronze. Malts to the fore, a little bready/doughy. Then hops - dry and earthy. Good balanced bitter.

New comments (I’m keeping the original numerical rating): Cask halfpint at The Grill, Aberdeen. ABV 4.2%. Deep golden colour, white head. Moderate aroma of citrus and spices. Distinct citrus and spices in the medium dry flavour, decent bittering hops. Original rating: 500 ml bottle, thanks to my beerpal Olav who brought it home from the Orkneys. ABV is 4.4%. Golden colour, big to moderate white head. Moderate but nice aroma of fruity and herbal hops. Fairly light bodied. The flavour has herbal notes throughout, with a dry and "dusty" finish. Moderate bitterness in the aftertaste.
