Kaffesump och karamell doft. Kaffe, karamell till smak

Bottle form Premier Gourmet. Brown orange-ish. Caramel, coffee, bit of candied dark sugar, panela, s bit alcoholic. Fairly sweet.

Bottle from Beerhawk. A dark brown coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Roasty, malty, coffee aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, coffee, caramel. Slightly bitter and also sweet, rich too. Good stuff from the excellent Founders Brewing Company.

Strong brown ale with Sumatran coffee by Founders, shared with Goedele. Thick and creamy, membranous-lacing, dense, frothy, pale greyish beige head over a dark but fully translucent, bright copper red-hued, warm bronze coloured beer, clear till the last drop so clearly filtered. Aroma of chestnut, coffee powder, fig jam, wet toast, brown rum, caramel candy, that annoying but unmistakable smell of pasteurization (cooked cloth), muesli, toffee, dried banana, raisin bread, dried cherries, candied beetroot. Sweet onset, fig jam, pear compote and baked banana with a sourish undertone, finely tingling carbonation, smooth and somewhat resinous, full mouthfeel. Very caramelly malt base - caramel candy - with a chocolatey and a slight toasty edge, merging with a fairly expressive coffee effect which provides more coffee aroma retronasally than 'black coffee bitterness' as would be the case in a coffee stout - yet this is of course a brown ale, so in that sense these aspects work well together. The pasteurization smell of freshly ironed, hot cloth comes along in the end, making it a bit 'industrial', before a spicy hop bitter accent and a strong, eventually even somewhat astringent, rum-like alcohol effect round things off. Caramelly malt sweetness lingers, with still that chocolatey edge. By itself a fine beer, with the coffee aspect well-integrated and adding some complexity in a pleasant way, but why does this beer reach me filtered and pasteurized, like some large macro brewing company would do? Second time in a week Founders disappoints me - though this in its respective concept is infinitely better than that awful Green Zebra 'Gose' I had from them last week.

Bottle from Eltham Wines, Eltham. Reddish brown pour with a beige head. Raisin, toffee, caramel, brown sugar and orchard fruit aroma. Flavours of nuts, toffee, light smoke, coffee, caramel, red apple. Nice nutty finish.

355ml bottle. Pours dark brown. Coffee, plum, strawberry, caramel, bit of booze, bit of biscuit. Surprisingly light body for the strength. Not exceptional.

Dark brown beer, medium head. Aroma is malt, coffee, roast, coffeefilter. Taste is the same, bitter, nice one.

Pours dark brown, with a caramel-colored, amber-like glow to it. Clear, and with a medium sized, mildly tanned head . Some lacing, seemingly stable . Smell is coffee, sharp, roasty, intense. Taste is bitter, sharp, coffee, roasty, strong coffe flavor, balances on the border of too much for me ( as its the more dry, roasty coffee that I don't like, VS the more sweet, aromatic coffe I love in beer) . Body and carbo are average, perhaps a bit thicker, and a bit lower than the very average, but all according to expectations. most of the beer gets lost to the coffee, but the base at least is solid. Well brewed, just not my thing I s'pose.
