As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of spring/summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat–clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness–and made some…well…adjustments.

Lively carbonation and medium body make this beer feel refreshing. Hops lightly attack the tongue, yet the finish is very soft and clean. Dangerously delicious.

On tap. Pours with a clearish golden body with hardly any head. Aroma is a bit of hops and a little bit of wheat. Taste is of ripe peaches and light hops, and possibly some mint. Lightly fizzy on the mouth and a bit on the dry side of things.

From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours hazy to cloudy yellow with a lacing white head. Mild fruity hops aroma. Flavour is grapefruity and smooth, not as sharp as this normally gets. Good balance to the malt too. Smooth and refreshing hoppy finish.

Bottled at Petalax Beer Festival. Hazy golden, rich but brief head. Perfumy tropical fruit aroma. Sweet and soapy with medium to full body. Flavour of pine needles, bubbly esters and alcohol. A bit sweet with Belgian style fruit yyeastiness, Bready syrupy finish with long bitterness. Has that clean, biscuity streamlined typical Stone-style mouthfeel and a juicy concentrated flavour, even though the hop freshenss is lost in this one.

Bottled. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is tropical fruits, hops, some grass and alcohol. Flavour is hops, sweet malts, mild alcohol and then caramel malts with some grassy bitterness in the finish. Nice brew!

Bottle at the Brickskeller in DC on January 11th, 2008. Pours a clear orange/gold with a thick head. Aroma is a mild hop and malt aroma. Flavor is banana, spices. Slight oxidation (or what I felt may have been) but not enough to be of any real concern to me. Not as good as the 11th, but a solid brew from Stone.

Clear orange coloured body with a super-thin white head..not looking too great! Aroma of hops, strong alcohol, bitter wheat and little else - way too alcoholic. Full-bodied; Sweet taste up front with apricots, peaches, apples and some fresh hops thrown in. Strong bitter malt and caramel lingers further behind - a bit too much. Overall, a decent beer, but too over the top for the style. Worth trying once and only once. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 26-September-2005.

22 oz. bottle shared by Gregis. Pour is slightly hazy orange gold with a one inch head that fades quickly to pretty much nothing. Aroma is pineapple citrus with some rounded malt sweetness and a wheat background. Taste is nice, fairly muted with the nice citrus hop bitterness, malt and wheat backbone. Body has a nice Barley Wine mouth feel. Wheat throughout, really get the wheat body in the finish. Thanks for sharing this one Greg!

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a vibrant golden color with a huge amber-white head. The aroma was strong grapefruit and pine with a sweet and slightly spicy finish. The flavor was sweet, tangy, grapefruity and had a hint of spicy hops underneath. There was a mild hoppy finish.

Poures a nice copper color with medium white head. Aroma is of malts, and citrus as well as some hops and some yeast. Flavor is citrus and some spices. Malts and a little hos round it out. Finishes bitter with some spiciness too. Alcohol is noticeable, but not overly so. A good brew.
