On tap at the brewpub, 2008 vintage. It pours an almost clear, brown body under a nice beige head. Orangepeel, loads of orangepeel and christmas spices like cloves and cardamom in the aroma. The malts struggle to fight their way to the front, but isn’t much succesful aromawise. The flavor on the other hand, has a nice malty sweetness, along with orangepeel and spices. Spiced finish too, but not so intense on orange peel. Medium body and a nice carbonation. A pleasant, special, easy to drink beer but probably in need of less spices and orangepeel. Rating: 7-4-7-3-15-3.6. 081022

Bottel, 2009 vintage. It pours a clear, copper-colored body with a nice, finger-thick beige head. Spiced nose with orange, anise, clove and cardamom. Toffee and nuts in the back. The flavor has a caramel sweetness, with nuts and some hoppy bitterness. Quite spiced, a bit too much I think. Orange-peel bitterness in the finish, as well as orange and spices. Full-bodied. Too spiced for my palate, or at least with the wrong combo and amounts of spices. Still a quite drinkable beer, maybe some gingerbread would be suitable with this one. 100424

Chestnut brown, kind of muddy. Herbal nose with cinnamon, earthy spice and a rich molassesly malt. Toasty, spicy character with lots of earthiness. Sweet, slightly molassesy finish.

Bottle. OK malty aroma, slightly vinous. Clear, dark brown colour. Quite malty flavour, some dust, a little vanilla. Not too shabby.

Bottled. A hazy red-brown beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of pumpernickle bread, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with primar notes of caramel, but also lighter notes of pumpernickle bread and earth, leading to a dry bitter and slightly roasted finish.

Pours a deep amber into a snifter. Mocha head quickly subsides to oil surface. Not an attractive smell -- unlike anything else. Very strange sour earth and herbs. Lasting bitter earthworm finish. Not pleasant.

(Bottle 50 cl) Courtesy of yespr. Hazy, dark, reddish brown with a beige head. Sweetish aroma of burned caramel. Medium-bodied with dry, burned caramel accents and a fairly bitter finish. Interesting. 281207

Dark ruby beer with a thin, yet lasting, soapy head - roasted malts and some doughy character in the aroma, with hints of caramel, plum, nutmeg, roasted nuts - creamy mouthfeel - semi-sweet flavor of munich and roasted malts - medium spicy notes, with some dry, herbal character - a gentle fruitiness throughout - a very slight gingerbread character - spices become a bit more apparent and warming in the finish - imagine a lightly spiced doppelbock - one of the most under-rated brews I’ve come across in a long time.
