Created for Pirate Life’s 4th birthday party, our new Acai and Passionfruit Sour has since become one of the most popular beers we’ve been pouring at our Port Adelaide brewery. By introducing lactobacillus (good bacteria) into the kettle and leaving it to work overnight, the brewed wort acquires a delicate and pleasant acidity. When paired with a generous dose of passion fruit pulp and Acai berry post-fermentation, we invite even more pucker to the party and a gorgeous rose blush colour to boot. With a simple malt bill of 50% Pale Malt and 50% wheat malt, we allow the souring process and fruit additions to take center stage. The small amount of Australian Enigma hops we use are added only for a lick of bitterness - no generous dry hop additions here. The nose is summer, passion pulp driven and clean, picked lemon, raspberry sherbet, each bubble bursting to release a suggestion of the tartness to come. Palate strikes fresh, lemon rind, stone fruits, tight acidity, a whisper of wheat malt leads to a clean, dry finish.

Day 11

Pirate Life Acai & Passionfruit Sour 3.5%

Pink-tinged gold with a tart sour fruit aroma. Medium bodied but smooth. It is really quite sour and acidic with a nice açai/passionfruit flavor. Solid.

26/10/2022. Can bought at Pyrmont Cellars (Porters Liquor) Pyrmont. Enjoyed from the can overlooking Bondi Beach. Super passion fruit aroma and taste. Bit watery but otherwise very nice.

(Can) Pours clear rose tinted golden with tiny thin white head. Aroma of raspberry, notes of candy sugar and leafy and lime hints. Light body with plenty of carbonation. Odd but not unpleasant taste. There’s tartness but not too much. There’s passion fruit and hints of raspberry. There’s no obvious sweetness. There are some other hard to place notes, one sort of funky. Refreshing but a bit odd.

Tap at Heart of Darkness, Singapore. Poured a clear copper colour with a thin white head. The aroma is yeast, biscuit, dough, light blackberry, blueberry citrus fruits. The flavour is moderate to light sour, with a light, crisp, slightly watery, light tart red berry citrus fruit palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. Light, but refreshing. Given the fruit content, was this one of my five servings of fruit / veg per day??
