Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter

This slightly sweet porter is brewed with select additions of crystal malts and sea salt to create flavors of peanut brittle and caramel without being cloying. The medium body and mouthfeel lay the perfect foundation to support the rich vanilla, oak, and bourbon flavors imparted by extended aging in bourbon barrels.

A bit thin and mild to be going up for barrel aging, but, to be honest, I’m hard-pressed to pick up any Wild Turkey notes anyway. Mostly bittersweet chocolate, some dark, slightly metallic raisin and apricot notes underneath, with a hint of salt and roasted malt on the fade. Not picking up bourbon at all, nor oak, and the caramel’s a subtle accent at the most. Watery feel doesn’t help. Tiny hint of bourbon on the nose mixes with chocolate. Brown pour with red around the edges and slight beige head, no lacing. Can’t believe this bomber was $11.

On tap at Conservatory. Pours a dark amber with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is caramel, wood, vanilla, bourbon. Medium body, wood, tobacco, caramel, boozy finish, decent.

22oz bomber pours with a clear dark brown body that has deep ruby red hues and supports a dark tan head. The aroma offers up oak, booze and some bourbon as well as a thin chocolate to caramel like note. The taste delivers straight up soured red wine like tartness and then slivers of dark roasted malts, a salt note and a modest level of bourbon booze. The spired red wine character is not working here.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Pours kind of flat, small ring of beige head on dark brown body. Aroma is the best feature, chocolate nutty, some of the caramel notes. Taste is sweet, more caramel, banana and peanuts. Seems thin for the fullness of taste, sweet lingering finish.

Bottle - Dark chocolate and toffee with light our on. Ones. Deep jet black with a decent beige head. Light toffee and some dark chocolate notes. Caramel and toffee dominate, which is great as that’s what you expect. Body is a bit on the lighter side.

On Tap at Taphouse, Boise Deep dark brown with a dense tan head and thick sheets of lacing Lots of bourbon barrel aging in the flavor. Middld of the road toasted roasted malt flavors. Not sure I get any "Salted Caramel" in there but it is a nice BA Porter. Smooth feel and some nice vanilla in there as well.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours crystal clear very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, almond, light plum/apple, light salt, herbal, and oak/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, vanilla, coconut, bourbon, oak, almond, light plum/apple, light salt, herbal, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, vanilla, bourbon, oak, nuttiness, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness bourbon/oak spiciness as well. Medium-plus carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice barrel aged English porter style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, bourbon barrel, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
