Poesiat & Kater’s Van Vollenhoven Extra Stout is based on a recipe from the original Van Vollenhoven brewery that existed in Amsterdam during the 18th century. It has a rich full malt body with roasted flavor notes. This was the top selling beer in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th century and was shipped all over the world.

Poesiat & Kater's Van Vollenhoven Extra Stout is our flagship beer and we are proud to be making it once again for beer lovers today.

33cl bottle from Beer52. A pitch black pour with a dense cream head; aroma of chocolate malts and yeast; fruity cocoa taste; with a dry frity finish. An interesting stout.

Thick creamy light brown head stayed well on a near black still body. Licourice, dark berry & smoky aroma. Medium to full bodied, silky in the mouth with a slight tingle on the back & clean finish. Bitter berry, brown sugar, malt, coffee & peach tastes with smoke hints with a tangy citrus finish.

Beer52 bottle. Black, tan head. This doesn't do anything special at all, it's what you'd expect and hope for from a strong stout. Rich, earthy malt, coffee, chocolate and a dash if fruit just to cut through that a bit. But it's really nice. Not one I'd necessarily remember and the strength demands that I couldn't drink loads of it but I'd want to.

Bottle. Color: Black, dense light brown head. Taste: Dark roasted malt, espresso, quite hopbitter, lightly sweet, earthy. Notes of liquorice. Grassy, resinous hop. Dry mouthfeel at long lasting finish. Above medium body, just below average carbonation.

Draft @ the brewpub, presented as Van Vollenhoven's Stout Original, not sure if it deserves a separate entry. Black color. Firm beige/light brown head. Aroma's: roasted malt, drop/licorice, umami. Ratronasal it's droppig/licorice, sweetish, umami. Flavor is moderate sweet, droppig, light bitter. Medium bodied. Roasty moderate bitter finish. Good stuff.

0.33 l bottle from 'Bierhuys', 7.1% abv, bb date not readable anymore. Pitch black with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of milk chocolate, hazelnut, licorice, vanilla and some coffee. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty taste of dark chocolate, licorice, coffee, some hazelnut, a touch of raisins and traces of vanilla, followed by a short, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy-dry finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy and moderately effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite nice but not the best stout at that abv, almost like liquid licorice, too much yeast character as well.
