Poesiat & Kater’s Van Vollenhoven Extra Stout is based on a recipe from the original Van Vollenhoven brewery that existed in Amsterdam during the 18th century. It has a rich full malt body with roasted flavor notes. This was the top selling beer in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th century and was shipped all over the world.

Poesiat & Kater's Van Vollenhoven Extra Stout is our flagship beer and we are proud to be making it once again for beer lovers today.

Rerate: Tap @ Poesiat & Kater, 15 cl sample. Dark brown color, medium frothy head. Aroma of roasty malts, dark choc and bit licorice. Smooth roasty bitterness, bit creamy choc, slight mocha sweetness. All very nicely balanced and very flavorful. What a difference tap vs bottle can make here. Bottle @ Jopen Proeflokaal during Roels book presentation, 10 cl sample. Black label mentioning Poesiat & Kater. Dark brown color, short frothy head. Aroma of roast and dark bread, bit licorice and earthy bitterness. Bit light in flavor, some roast, earthy bitterness. Could use more body or creaminess. Decent beer though. 3.3

On tap at the brewpub. Black colour, beige head. Aroma hard-roasted malts, black liquorice, caramel, light fruity, tiny hint of peat, light metallic/brown sugar, leather. Flavour is sweet, caramel, hard-roasted malts, figs, some coffee, bitter roast finish. Medium bodied. Nice, but de Schans version is still by far the best imho.

Bier geprobeerd met LiekevdV in Alkmaar. Het is een zachte Stout, vol zwart met een bruin schuim. Het heeft een lekker zachte smaak met hints van koffie en chocolade.

On tap at Proeflokaal De Boom, Alkmaar - ABT Bier van de Maand for February apparently. Nice looking black beer, thin tan topper. Nose is toast, chocolate, coffee. Taste is much of the same with a liquorice tip at the end. Decent.
