Deep, super dark brown coloured body, with a large, super soapy head, two to three centimetres tall that has large bubbles, but fades quickly. Aroma of rye (of course), nuts, specialty grains, some yeast, bread, earth and rustic funk along with a touch of dry hay. Medium-bodied; Strong caramelised sugar flavours dominate with a lot of grass and dryness from all the malts, with a definite rye, nut and earthy profile that shows the flavours from the rye, but also the nuanced complexities from the simple ingredient. Aftertaste is mellow and very sweet with the caramel, toffee and earth really showing up way more than any hops, alcohol or yeast - this is about caramelised sugars and deep rye grain, and it does it well! Overall, a nice and robust rye based ale that has a ton of flavour, especially considering the low alcohol, all with a good bite and smooth sugar profile. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 20-May-2020 for US$1,99 sampled at my house here in Washington on 20-July-2020, exactly two months later.
