"I think i'm getting the black lung pop. It's not very well ventilated down there". This really, really, ridiculously good looking seventh incarnation of our muchly-beloved peated stout (this year aged in red wine barrels) will leave you gasping for that last breath of clean air before succumbing to the intense chocolate, roasty, shmokin', red wine-y flavour.

Bottle split at L6, thanks to Tips, 'Farewell New Ken' tasting 18/09/19. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a big frothy tan cap of bubbles. Nose is charr, chocolate biscuit, light spice, dried fruits. Taste comprises toffee, ashen tones, cocoa powder, charr, mellow roast. Medium plus bodied, prickly carbonation, semi drying close. So so affair … way overcarbed which lets this one down.

Bottle shared in London - big thanks to Tips. Pours black-brown with a small, foamy tan head. Really interesting stuff, definitely a fair bit of smoke, peat, iodine, background baking cocoa, lightly tangy berries. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more red wine kind of fruits, bittersweet cocoa, mellow roast, ash, lingering strong peaty smoke character - I like that last bit a fair amount. Fun, dynamic stuff.

Pours black with brown head. Loads of smoke on nose and some cherry hints. Almost cigar flavours but with some port notes. A great sipper that really opens up too. An annual treat to see what they do with thus one.

From a 650ml bottle on 17/12/2017 (shared with Butz). Pours near black with a small tan head. the nose features light smoke, chocolate, dark fruit with red wine notes. The flavour features sweet berries, more light smoke, and some mild roasted malt. Has some oak and red wine in the background, but it's not overwhelming. Really easy drinking for an impy Nice stuff.

Tap at the Royston Hotel, Melbourne. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin tan head. The aroma is dry roasty malt, coffee, chocolate, smoky notes, red berry fruit and vinous. The flavour is moderate sweet with a rich, dry, light smooth toffee caramel, liquorice, alcohol bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle, 12C. Very dark brown with a light tan head that fades gradually form an inch. Aroma is earthy and peated with mocha and berries, oak. Just a little more than medium bodied, it’s got a little creaminess to it and the carbonation is on the low side of medium. Mocha, light peaty notes, the berries unsurprisingly turn out to be wine and have a tannic edge to them. It’s only moderately sweet and the bitterness doesn’t stick out as much as 45IBU would lead you to expect. No real sign of the alcohol. Whilst it’s really quite peated it’s otherwise less shouty than previous outings in the series and it’s a rather harmonious number. Really good.
