Imperial Baltic Porter with Povidla
There’s probably not much better feeling for a brewer than being able to brew a batch with some of their greatest inspirations. For us, that’s Hungarian brewery Brew Your Mind, whose uncompromisingly beautifully crafted New England IPAs stand at the very top of European brewing in our eyes; and getting a glimpse into the minds of the brewers behind these legendary beers is simply an experience that’s hard to replicate.
Winter Affair is not only a celebration of exceptional beer experiences, but also a celebration of collaboration and creativity. One of the breweries we have joined forces with this year is Estonia’s Põhjala, a legend in the world of strong dark beers, and together we have created an Imperial Baltic Porter that pays homage to both history and innovation. Baltic Porter is a historic style from the Baltic region, the homeland of Põhjala. It is a very heavy beer that is fermented with bottom (lager) yeast and then lagered for an extended period of time. The chocolate flavour from the roasted malts and the notes of dried fruit that come from the caramel malts have been complemented with traditional Czech plum jam (called povidla) and beech smoked malt. The result is a heavy, complex and harmonious beer with notes of chocolate, dried fruit, plum accents and a subtle smoky note that blends beautifully with the flavours of the povidla.
Hops Used: Magnum, Agnus

On tap at Taphouse CPH, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma has some smoky malts, toasted notes, maybe a bit of vanilla. Flavour has a great smokiness, deep malt profile, vanilla, and dry cocoa. Great smoked malt profile that lingers on and on. Excellent.

Can at Poctivej vycep. Full body, not cloying though, med-light carbo, lots of foaming though. Strength evident, but not even boozy, only light background warmth. Lots of dried fruits in flavour, prunes obviously, but also light raisins. Med-light cocoa, light chocolatey, also med-light ashy burnt feeling, a bit too much, but not tragic. Overall strong, true to its premise, good. ABV hidden reasonably. All in all quite good.

Can at Poctivej Výčep, with Gurthar. Almost pitch black body, laaasting, fairly big creamy tan-light brown head. Soft, sweetish aroma, plums and poppy on caramel, cakey, light cocoa. Sweetish taste, pleasant cakey, nutty, poppy touches, light plum notes, but with a very warming finish, bitter, roasty, bit alcoholic, roast clinging too long to the tongue. Man, this actually tastes like someone boosted Tomislav to 10%, with all the upsides and downsides. Hooh. Impressive, but sharing a can is a legit option.
