300ml on tap, nicely served in an original glass outside at Cafe Elbflorenz, Bad Schandau. Slowly diminishing beige head leaving spotty lacing behind. Deep dark in body colour with a rustic shade. Plain roasted dark malts on the nose, bready. Roasted flavours, moments of liquorice, dark bread, nuts, moderate candy sweetness, and hints of dark fruits. Roasted malty ending. Fine bodied. Good drinking, well-made version of the style (03.07.2016).

Bottle from a colleague. Thanks Ian. Black beer lasting tan head. Bready German yeast aroma. Some blackcurrant. Just having a well made fresh German lager makes me smile. It’s an ok schwarz. Not overly chocolatey on the malts. It’s a fruity dark lager. Not the best, but when you’ve had to go a few months without a fresh German lager then you begin to get homesick. It’s funny well make lagers are just so much more fun that ales. Some nuttiness. I liked it a lot. Fresh, simple, bready, nutty. Just simply well made and utterly drinkable. Chapeau.

*Old rating, best before 02.02. Schön weiches, schön malziges Schwarzbier. Leicht röstig, ein Hauch Lakritz, röstmalzig mit milder Herbe im Nachgeschmack.

Very dark but clear brown colour, medium frothy beige head, recedes slowly. Malty aroma, light roasted, cocoa, some liquorice, coffee. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, roasted malts. Light to medium body, oily to watery texture, soft carbonation, aftertaste mild bittersweet, roastiness rules. A rather mild and thin schwarzbier, acceptable schwarzes.

This lovely looking beer was poured from the tap at the breweries stall/bar within Berlin’s Green Week on 18th Jan 2014. Green Week is a showcase of food and drink with many countries and each German State having bars to try their beers etc, etc (plus other stuff): hence I had 28 different beers in one day. Black as you’d expect this is one of the better Schwarzbier around, it has a good malt presence and although not rich or smooth it does have more body and depth than most I’ve tried. It also made a pleasant change to the light Pilsners I had before and after it. The aroma and taste give a mild smoky, deep malty and dark fruit character to the brew: worth finding.

Bottle. Pours slightly cloudy dark brown with airy but stable beige head. Clear aroma of roast, malt and caramel. Bitter, roasty and hoppy flavour, with rough, grainy and malty notes. Sourish and bitter aftertaste with a hint of meral, without which the beer would be much better. Creamy mouthfeel. Undemanding but quite uninspiring, too.
