Bottle. Dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma of licorice, aniseed, mocha. Wow, it’s actually got Black Sambuca in it! Have to admit I had that a bit in the 80s. You can tell it’s not a good smell because you used to set it (and coffee beans) on fire before drinking. But the beer flavours reassert themselves a bit in the taste - there’s a bit of bread, some roast and a pretty decent bitter kick. Yeah, OK.

Taster at GABS Auckland 2017. Pours black. Liquorice, liquorice, liquorice. Bit of alcohol heat to really kill it off. Hard pass.

Tap at the Boilermaker House, Melbourne. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, floral hop. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter with a light roasty malt liquorice, sugary fennel seed, floral, aromatic, alcohol bitter palate and a lingering floral bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Not sure what to make of this. Lots of liquorice and aromatic spice notes but not a traditional Baltic Porter. I guess they should be congratulated for pushing the boat out!
