A beer that we have been wanting to make for a while is not so much a Guinness clone but a tribute to it by using some of the components and similar ingredients from a time when it was actually ‘local’!
Would you believe it that Guinness had a maltings and research centre in this part of the world. Warminster to be precise. Yes that’s right. They used to own Warminster Maltings from 1941 which they bought off E.S Beaven until they sold it in 2001 to Robin Apel.
Beaven is credited with inventing the first hybrid barley variety which is the Plumage Archer we use in our beers. Prior to taking over Warminster Maltings from him, Guinness and the Irish Department of Agriculture had appointed a researcher Dr Hunter who as Beaven’s counterpart, developed Spratt Archer albeit 3 years after Beaven’s own barley hybrid.
Our Plumage Archer rather than its cousin Spratt however, provides the bulk of the grist.

Cask by stillage at One Inn The Wood, Petts Wood on 25th April 2025. Almost opaquely sepia-black with almost no foam or lace. Rich and roasty aroma with pungent fruitcake. Burst of roastiness in-mouth with cherry fruits, peel and a generous hand of smoke. A finish of smoked roasty malts. Medium bodied with a smooth yet engaging mouthfeel. Will have another before the night’s out that’s for sure.
