Bottle at the End of an Era tasting at ABC Beers, Den Haag. Poured a dark brown colour with a frothy tan head. The aroma is rich roasty malt, grassy simcoe hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a rich citrus, liqourice malt palate. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Like a black IPA without the carbonation.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines. Cotteridge, Birmingham, consumed at home Thursday 19th November 2015 I hadn’t really thought about the style of this so was a little surprised to pour an Imperial Stout, I really don’t know why but for some reason I looked at it before pouring and thought it should be a DIPA. Pours black with a beige head, thick in the mouth. Loz doesn’t think that this tastes very strong (this is where we disagree from the off). Not as cloying as many big Impy Stouts (particularly the big USA Impy Stouts) Really quite tangy, roasty and with a little smokiness, but some zappy hoppiness also. The alcohol provides quite an oomph and warmth I liked this. A7 A5 T8 P4 Ov15 3.9

Keg at the bottle shop. Opaque black oily coloured pour with a halo of tan head. Aroma is really earthy campfire, coffee, and some jammy fruits, black forest gateaux. Flavour is composed of sweet cakey malts, praline and nutty choc, earthy coffee in the finish. Palate is velvety, smooth, moderate carbonation, little creamy. Pretty smooth for the abv.

Bottle (first rating in bottle, by the looks). Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Slow moving pour. Nearly black. In the glass it has a thin, weighty, lasting, sticky, tan head. Aroma is pretty savoury, overall. It’s meaty. Some tar. Charred wood. And then there’s a fruity, grapefruit, chocolate orange sweetness that delivers a lovely balance. Taste is big, roasty, and hoppy bitter. Some lip stickage. Then more bitterness. Easy drinking, mind. Sweetens up on the tongue. Feels surprisingly light. Finishes long, fruity, roasty bitter. It’s Sunday dinner in a glass. Yorkshire pudding starter. Roast beef main. Black Forest gateau for dessert.
