Collab between West Coast and Ghost Brewing, a RIS not aged on barrels, but on wood chips. Sober but attractive 50 cl bottle. Creamy, moussy, deep brownish mocha coloured head retaining thinly on the edge and in thin patches of foam in the middle, over a black beer with deep mahogany-hued edges. Strong aroma of strong roasted coffee beans and espresso, wet wood, oaky tannins, bitter (unsugared) chocolate, a lot of cold black coffee, hint soy sauce, lots of ’natural’ and therefore undisturbing iron, dried berries, hazelnuts, burnt toast, burnt pipe tobacco, leather, biltong, salmiak, fresh paint, whisky, chicory, burnt branches, charcoal. Intense flavor, dried meat-like umami with basic roasted barley sourishness and bitterness apparent from the start, very low in sweetness initially but gaining a softer edge later on thanks to a caramelly malt effect, which is otherwise buried under a heavy load of very coffeeish (even aromatically) roasted bitterness; thick and viscous body with soft carbonation as is to be expected from the style. Roasted bitterness, even a bit charcoal-like, as well as an actual bitter coffee taste dominate the finish along with subtly drying wood tannins (less obvious than in barrel aged beers) and spicy, peppery hops; a glow of warming, whisky-like alcohol ensues, flirting with astringency but otherwise remaining buried under the mass of roasted malt and sharp black coffee bitterness. This is a stout with balls: heavily roasted, thick, uncompromising, strong and ’masculin’, so to speak, in which this potent stout character is soberly but adequately adorned with drying woody effects. The roasted bitterness sticks with you for a long time - and that is how it should be in this fascinating style. Hugely recommended.

On tap at CBC 2016 - day 2. Roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa. Cannot feel the BA components, but even so, it’s a solid Nordic imperial stout.
