Bottle from Waitrose in Canary Wharf. A deep, dark brown in the glass and a massive pillowy head that lasted to the end. No real nose and no real flavour either! Some malt, but otherwise one of the most boring beers I have had in a long time. Whether this lack of any interest was down to me or the beer I do not know, but I have had many, many better brown ales (Harvey's Lewes Castle is the benchmark for me).

Cask at the Victoria, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark brown with a thin off white head and lots of clingy lace. The aroma is sweet nutty malt. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth, rich roasty, light chocolate, liquorice hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at the Waterloo Tap, 14/10/16. Mahogany brown with a decent khaki cap. Nose is sweet malts, brown sugars, stewed fruits, bourbon biscuit. Taste comprises toffee, molasses, sweet malts, toasted brown bread, fruit esters. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with light hop bitterness. Average stuff, too sweet and lacking balance, couldn’t drink a lot of this.
