The epitome of a “farmhouse” ale, Picnic Ants is a Saison that is true to style. Aromas of pear, citrus rind, and fresh cut grass spiral thru earthy spice into a soft, light bodied beer that tastes of tart citrus fruit and peppered orange zest. Delightfully complex with an extremely dry finish, this is a summer thirst quencher for sure. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. This is the real Belgian (style) deal! This beer is intentionally “funked” with brettanomyces yeast.

Bottle from Bernie’s Real Ale Off Licence, Solihull. Gushed a hazy straw colour with a big frothy white head. The aroma is grainy acid citrus. The flavour is acid citrus with a light crisp refreshing yeasty citrus fruit, light spice palate and a bubbly mouthfeel. Medium to light bodied with lively carbonation.

Bottle. Nose is very funky, strawberry, peach, sherbert, underlying yeast, musty hay barn; slight clove. very inviting. Taste is funky, straw, floral, cloves, grain, grassy, more funk, as it opens there is a little leather, lemon and orange peel, herbal. Mouthfeel is good. An excellent, dry farmhouse ale, with good earthy funkiness; I’m really surprised by the lukewarm reviews.

12 ounce bottle from Woodmans Madison West. Pours a clear golden color with a medium sized offwhite head. Poor head retention. Aroma of citrus and stone fruits, and candi sugar. Tart throughout. The taste is pineapple, citrus, plum, earthy and tart notes. Almost a barnyard like note. Medium bodied. Pretty tasty.

This beer pours a hazed yellow-gold color with a thin off-white head that burns away steadily. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Fruity aroma with yeast and spice notes. Light body with flavors of citrus, belgian yeast and sweet malt. Mild spices in the background as well. The finish is fruity with a short yeast aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bomber - pours a lightly hazy, effervescent, burnished gold - semi-sweet nose of tasted grains, honey, cantaloupe, peach, coriander, light acetic character, and some wildflower notes - taste is a bit on the sweet ad heavy side for the style - moderately acetic, and it is hard to tell if this is intentional or not - it adds a dimension to the beer that takes a little getting used to - a lot of peach, coriander and lemon peel - some bitter herbs around the edges - medium acidity in the finish - needs some fine-tuning, but pretty interesting.

22 oz bottle generously sent to me by alagnak. pour is hazed yellow golden orange with a thick 2 inch white head. Some lazy carbonation bubbles float up to the surface. The head is quite lasting, when it eventually falls, nice spotty lacing is left behind. Really pretty in my Tank 7 Tulip. Aroma of tangerine citrus fruit, lemon peel and husky wheat grain. Nice fresh and balanced nose. Taste is the citrus fruit, along with a yeasty spice clove that I didn’t detect in the nose. The grain wheat is in the taste and carries from middle through to the finish. Nice transition of flavors. The aftertaste has some yeasty herbal medicinal thing that didn’t really fit with the rest of the beer. Palate is medium, nice active carbonation and a dry finish. Really nice hoppy Saison. Thanks again Chris.

Shared by Dan, thanks a lot. I really like this, its my kind of Saison. Pours a thick straw-golden color. Cannot see through it and has a small head. Aroma is very strong on the spicy and estery Saison yeast. Fruity aspects abound including lemon. Flavor has that great estery and fruity yeastiness all over. But it is easy drinking and has just a bit of sweetness at the end. The aftertaste has a lingering yeast spice character. I really liked this and want to drink it again.
22oz bomber, no date, Duvel sampling glass.

22oz bottle. Cloudy, thick, orange-tan with a fluffy white head. The aroma is quite fresh, with some effervescent citrus. Sweet and tangy, but dry, with some solid wheaty tart funk that sticks around in the aftertaste. This is actually one of the truer to style US Saisons Ive had, with that rich farmhouse twang. Some faint spice notes as well. Superb.
