This complex beer is brewed in honour of previous winners of the Rugby World Cup. Pilgrim hops from England to add bitterness, Motoueka and Rakau, from New Zealand, for flavour and dry hopped with Galaxy, from Australia, for extra aroma. Then, in addition to the rye, there is lager malt, in honour of South Africa’s favourite tipple. The resulting beer is a worthy winner.

Cask ale, half-pint shared with Finn at Mad Bishop & Bear. Bubbles on the surface of a misty golden body, spotty lacing. Moderate smell of leafy hops and mid-sweet malts. Fine blended taste of bread-like malts and leafy hops. Moments of leafy bitterness to the end. Decent. (London, 30.09.2023).

Cask at Swan, Farnborough. Fruity berry aroma. Dark amber. Thick off-white head. Medium bitter. Malts. Slight acidic fruit and hint of caramel. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Long finish, marred by an astringent aftertaste.

Cask at the Hope And Champion, Beaconsfield. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is light sweet malt. The flavour is moderate bitter with a yeast, floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A solid bitter. Plenty of flavour.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Deep copper with a thick beige head. Caramel at first with a grassy, leafy bitter finish. More hoppy than the initial sip leads you to expect. Balance of bitterness against the malt is right but not sure I like the flavour of these hops. Not bad though.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Dark amber with a tight cream head; rye aroma; sour grain taste with some orangey fruit; and a pleasant prickly bitterness before a dry finish. Full of flavour and very drinkable.
