The Double Oatmeal Stout was a style popular in England during the 19th century. As the name suggests oats are used as a central flavor and we chose to add coffee to strengthen the roasted tones.

(Bottle) Dark brown colour with brief, frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffe, black rye bread, caramel, roasted nuts, dark chocolate and hints of orange peel. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, black bread, roasted nuts, cacao, caramel, brown sugar, orange peel and a balanced, slightly citric, coffee bitterness. More than medium body, quite sweet. Smooth and well rounded mouthfeel. Really tasty and well balanced. Hides the 10% pretty well. Very nice.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Off-black pour with a frothy tan head. Roasty coffee nose with plenty of dark malts, burnt toast, liquorice & soil. Slightly sweet, tiny bitter & malty taste. Soft, round, velvety, tiny astringent & slightly overcarbonated mouthfeel. Solid stuff! Swirl it a lot and the mouthfeel improves.

33 cl bottle from Systembolaget, saved a good while now. Mölnlycke version. BB 09-02-2018, Batch no 367.Sampled on September 16, 2016.Builds up a massive head, get the feeling it might be a bit overcarbonated or perhaps some refermentation has happened in the bottle? The head settles to a two finger thick, though sort of bubbly, light brown with some lacing. Clear black color with some dark brown to the end of the glass shining through when held up to light.Mild malty sweet scent, also an evident alcohol touch. The coffee that I’m used to in this seems to have gone far away from here with time. Also a little bit fruity, some subtle chocolate and roasted notes, cacao in the nose. Feels a bit tired, though not really oxidized in the cardboard or vinous way, more compared to how I remember having it before.Sweet, malty, alcohol, roasted, rye bread, hints of ashes in the taste. Here as well the coffee seems gone, almost had expected green bell peppers to have developed, but that I can not really get. Long lasting sweet, bitter, roasted aftertaste. Gut warming lasting alcohol notes as well. Also long in to the aftertaste I get some green apples/acetaldehyde.Smooth big mouthfeel, a tad bit fizzy from CO2, but not too disturbing. Medium high bitterness that finishes with a mineral sensation. The beer holds up well in quality, if not compared to how it was fresh or expecting any coffee, in a blind tasting I would’ve likely stated a fairly solid, albeit alcohol driven, imperial stout.Rating for this slighty aged version in numbers: 6/4/7/4/14=3.5Had this many times while working for Poppels in the past, then was a lot more clear in the coffee notes, though at times I thought it was too sweet, a bit like coffee with sugar. Fresh my score would’ve more been like: 8/4/8/4/17= 4.1Will leave score as of how the bottle is now though, in part since I wasn’t allowed to rate it when working for the brewery, so never took notes of this particular beer at the time, but also since I am well clear of the BB date still, so as of the brewery this beer really should hold up and the score of tonight will reflect how I perceive the beer at this time.
