A handsome, dark porter type ale, traditionally brewed using only the finest quality of Stonehenge Spring Water, barley, wheat, crystal, black and chocolate malts, whole hops and the brewery’s own top-fermenting yeast. The rich roasted malts and the hint of liquorice are very well complimented by the developing bitter flavour.

Cask-conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 3/1/09. Dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma of coffee and milk chocolate. Flavour started with some sweet, creamy chocolate before a touch of smokiness and some spice. The finish was pleasantly bitter.

[on draught at The Retreat, Reading] Creamy head; smells like an ashtray. Smoke remains in taste, but is mellowed with smooth creamy coffee and a hint of licquorice. Aftertaste smokey and a little spicey. For me this was one of the nicest English pints I’ve yet tried, but for others it’s possibly a "love it or hate it" one. As a smoked beer, it was certainly far better than a German Rauchbier I had the same night.
