A handsome, dark porter type ale, traditionally brewed using only the finest quality of Stonehenge Spring Water, barley, wheat, crystal, black and chocolate malts, whole hops and the brewery’s own top-fermenting yeast. The rich roasted malts and the hint of liquorice are very well complimented by the developing bitter flavour.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours almost black with a small foamy cream head. There’s roasted malts and autumn fruits in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying sharpness. Flavour has roasted malts, dark fruits and smokey ash. Hints of several fruits come through later – cherries, plums, blackberries. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. This is decent.

Handpull cask at the Seven Stars, Bristol. Dark brown, almost opaque. A small sandalwood head sits on top. Some smoky notes in the aroma alongside weak malt. Taste sweet with light notes of Ovaltine. Watery body. Hard to get excited by this.
