Brewed in honor of O’Brien’s 30th Anniversary, Handgeplukte Kriek – a special blend of lambic-style sour ales brewed with rare Schaerbeek cherries grown right here in Jamul by Chad Stevens, one of O’Brien’s original patrons. Schaerbeek cherries are native to Brussels, and Chad is one of only two people in the U.S. able to grow this incredible fruit.
For this release, we used 870 pounds of cherries from Chad’s trees—seedlings he personally brought from Belgium and planted locally.

Draft. Crimson beer with a pink head. Cherry and tart aroma. Light sour flavor with cherries. Medium bodied. Cherry and light sourness linger.

Reddish-pinkish, no head. Big, bright schaarbekse on the nose, quite promising. Tart, lots of bright cherry, not super complex but that’s a fantastic cherry character. A bit thin in the finish. Some woody accents.

On tap at AleSmith, pours a dark red with a small pink head. Aroma is full of dark red cherries—yeah, that’s the schaerbeekse—gentle tartness and a hint of funk. Flavour is remarkably complex, with deep dark cherries, cherry pie that has a light baking spice character, and a hint of funk. Deep cherry complexity and wonderful buggy depth that’s buried beneath. Damn, this is excellent.

Tap @MBCC 2025, Green Session. Clear red, tiny white head. Funky cherry aroma, light almonds and a touch of acetone. Almonds and cherry flavour, funky, a little light perhaps.
