Brewed under the watchful eye of the liver birds. Roasted barley, flaked oats and a selection of dark malts are combined to create a robust, dark stout with notes of coffee, rich toffee and chocolate, finished with a lingering tannic bitterness.

Can from my Home Bargains haul. Glossy and dark. Thick foamy beige head with healthy lacing. The aroma is quite bitter- raw cacao and coffee with peripheral berries. The flavour then differs to some extent - an immediate tangy berry streak alongside espresso bitterness with added liqourice and spice. Underlying burnt caramel. The bitterness then continues to gain prominence with added herbal hoppy elements. Medium bodied. Slick to oily. Sticky. Soft-average carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. Another decent bargain beer.

[44cl can from Home Bargains.] A glossy peaty brown pour with a thin pale tan head; chocolate malt aroma; lactic mouth feel with some chocolate and a strong malty taste with bitterness from the roast; then a dry finish with a touch of alcohol in the throat and stomach
. A solid Extra Stout.

The Liver Bird is famously on the crest of Liverpool Football Club, however it was their city rivals Everton exactly 40 years ago today winning for Merseyside in the European Cup Winners' Cup Final against Rapid Vienna. A very steady stout enhanced by a very good body and mouthfeel, all disguising its strength, with a milkiness to its taste also contributing here, it's light roasted in both aroma and taste but still flavoursome.
