This summer’s brew, Calcutta 1757, is a refreshing ‘India’ Pale Ale. India Pale Ale is also referred to as ‘pale ale prepared for India’. In the early 1700’s troops and British citizens living in India as part of the colonial rule did not have access to good British ale and any attempts to ship malty English ale to them resulted in spoilage. IPA was the solution. The generous amount of hops in this brew protected it from the heat and motion of the British sailing ships of the day. ‘Calcutta 1757’ is an authentic generously hopped IPA, delivering a bitter punch, balanced out by its strength. The light, amber ale offers subtle hints of honey and spice upfront with a light berry fruit finish.

Cask at Rose & Crown Stafford (18/9/23). Pours a golden orange with a small foamy off-white head and good lacing. Malts and ranges in the aroma, plus some hints of citrus. In the mouth there is a brief initial burst of bitterness before sweet malts take over. Bitterness creeps back again later though. Flavour has traditional hops and autumn fruits plus a hint of ginger. Finish is dry and slightly sticky. This is quite nice.

Cask @ Shrewsbury Real Ale Festival 2023. Previously also at The King's Arms, Church Stretton where it tasted peppery and warm. Here it was slightly bitter, pouring a deep gold, white head. Gentle caramelised malt base with light honey and soft citrus moments. Ok, just about.

Gold/amber with a creamy white head and soft fruit and cereal on the nose. Light to medium bodied with sweet fruit malt, floral hop and bitterness all gathered together adequately

Hand-pulled half-pint at the 24th Shrewsbury CAMRA Beer Festival on 6th Nov 2014. Poured a clear amber with a thin off-white head. The nose had a light citrus aroma, the taste had some caramel like sweetness along with a mild fruitiness and those citrus notes from the smell. Nice blend of flavours and easy to drink.

Cask at the Wellington; clear golden amber pour with a thin bubbly off white head, light lemon aroma, taste has caramel sweetness, pale malts and some feint citrus action. Light bitterness and quite refreshing.

Cask at The Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a crystal clear medium amber with a thin white broken head. The aroma is weak citrus fruit and malt. The flavour is medium to weak bitter, a little malt and not a lot else really. A rather lifeless beer lacking flavour.
