On gravity at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol April 2013. Dark brown with a slight, off-white head. Slight roastiness, some sweet dark fruit and a dryish finish. A bit thin in the mouth and no coffee evident. So so.

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Black with a moderate cream head and a middling amount of fizz. There’s definitely coffee in the aroma, but it’s rather lighter on tasting. There’s roasted malt too and a little smoke, but it’s rather thin and watery and the hops fail to show. On the plus side it’s easy-drinking and strangely refrshing for a supposed porter, but overall it’s rather insipid and disappointing. Shame.

Cask at The White Swan, Solihull. Poured a dark reddish brown with a frothy tan head. The aroma is of roasted malt and coffee. The flavour is weak bitter, malty with a little fruit and almost no coffee. I expected much more from this than it delivered.

Cask at Wetherspoons Ruislip Manor. A dark brown/ruby coloured pour with a small off white head on top. Not much aroma, maybe malty. Tastes roasty, malty, some coffee. Really hard work this one, I left half a pint in the glass.

Festival cask ale, one-third pint at the Richard John Blackler (JDW) . Teak-reddish body colour, low tan-coloured head, mostly diminishing. Coffee and dark berries to the nose. Sweet caramel together with dark fruits to the taste buds, subdued coffee notes beneath. Semi dry ending. Easy to drink, a little too sweet and thin bodied, but ok (Liverpool, 07.04.2013).

Cask at the Willow Walk (JDW), 04/04/13. Clear dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that dissipates edgeward. Nose is a little on the thin side, dark malt, brown sugars, hint of chocolate. Taste comprises light roast malts, Wheatabix, touch of chocolate, light traces of coffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry roasty finish. A little on the bland side but drinkable none the less!

Cask at Willow Walk, London. It pours deep ruby-brown with a small beige head. The nose is earth, light roast, toast, filter coffee, light ash and a touch of dark fruit. The taste is light roast, coffee grinds, toast, earth, burnt aspect and dark fruit with a dry finish. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. A bit thin and weak really, but drinkable nonetheless.
