Brewed with heaps of chocolate malt, cacao nibs, and local, late season red raspberries from Agriberry Farm, Hardywood Raspberry Stout captures the essence of a decadent raspberry truffle in liquid form. A beguiling ale, this stout’s enticing cocoa aromatics build to a flavorful crescendo of full bodied dark chocolate, subsiding with a pleasantly sweet, tart raspberry jam laced finish. Pilot batch at 9.3% and 55 IBU.

Draft at Mellow Mushroom Charlottesville, 7/25/14. Pours a dark brown with a thin creamy brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of raspberry jam, chocolate, roasted malts, mild earth. The taste is chocolate, raspberry and roasted malts. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness, lingering tart fruit, very nicely balanced. This far exceeded my expectations.

Location: 750 ml bottle from somewhere in Richmond, 7/26/14

Aroma: It has a rather sweet raspberry aroma, with some light roast notes
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown, with a fizzy head on it
Flavor: There's a good amount more roast in flavor, but it is still sweet though
Palate: It has a lighter body for the style at least, with an avarage carbonation to it
Overall Impression: I thought this one was a pretty nice beer. For one with so much sweetness, it didn't turn me off, which is a feet in and of itself. Another nice beer from Hardywood.

Bottle @ RBSG Grand Tasting. Pours a black appearance with a brown head. Raspberry purée/jam, chocolate, vanilla, slightly woody aroma. Somewhat light bodied and spritzy carbonation. Dark chocolate, raspberry soda, slight roasty flavor. Ehhh.

750ml bottle pours a watery black with some cloudy, white head. Nose has a ton of wet raspberry, toasted bread, molasses, plum. Flavor has a ton of raspberry, toast, mild coffee, lots of jelly. Fruity finish.

Bottle (2014) shared with Maryland friends, poured into a tasting glass. Pours black with brown hues and a tan head. Aromas of raspberries mostly, light chocolate, light roast. Tasting notes of mostly raspberries with light chocolate and light tart notes. Medium body with a mostly dry finish. Medium carbonation, light mouthfeel. Would like more chocolate in the taste and a fuller body but it’s a solid fruity stout.

Draft at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook. This one poured a dark, nearly black color without much of a head. Aroma was pretty much like puréed raspberries, with a touch of roasted and chocolate notes. Flavor was roasted malts, with plenty of sweet raspberries. Slightly tart notes in the finish. At 9.3% this one is a bit higher than this beer probably deserved. A nice lighter stout would probably have worked with this beer about perfect with the fruits. Otherwise this beer was pretty enjoyable.
