Brewed with heaps of chocolate malt, cacao nibs, and local, late season red raspberries from Agriberry Farm, Hardywood Raspberry Stout captures the essence of a decadent raspberry truffle in liquid form. A beguiling ale, this stout’s enticing cocoa aromatics build to a flavorful crescendo of full bodied dark chocolate, subsiding with a pleasantly sweet, tart raspberry jam laced finish. Pilot batch at 9.3% and 55 IBU.

$9.99 Bomber from Trader Joe’s. Pours black with an inch of brown head. Heavy, thick aroma of raspberries, chocolate, and a bit of something else I can’t quite place. Taste is chocolate raspberries, light caramel, light coffee. Somewhat sweet, but has a tinge of bitter dark chocolate as well.

750 ml bottle thanks to Eric S. The aroma is big time raspberry puree with light chocolate. The body is a bit lighter in body for a stout, flavor is borderline artificial. Light traces of tartness in the finish. Drinkable without a doubt.

Ridiculously deep dark brown coloured body with no transparency - this one is fully opaque...all with a nice three centimetre tall deep brown head. Aroma of tons of fresh raspberries, deep chocolate, malt, alcohol, earth and still more raspberry sour notes - very nice and complex. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong earthy malt with some deep lactic notes, a touch of sour rapsberries and a solid fruity sweetness at the end. Aftertaste shows a very good balance of three elements - malt, sour and sweet, with the cacao and deep roasted malt hitting hard, but the sour raspberries showing well and some strong chocolate and fruit notes round out everything nicely. Overall, a surprisingly nice imperial stout with a lot of rasbperry flavour, a good balance and quite a bit of complexity. I sampled this 75 cL capped bottle purchased from Trader Joe’s in Falls Church (Bailey’s Crossroads), Virginia on 08-January-2015 for US$9,99 sampled at home in Washington on 22-January-2015, but this one could have aged for a quite a bit longer to round out the deep notes.

Sample at GABF 10/04/2014, thanks to my BIL for assistance with note-taking. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium thick khaki head that diminishes steadily. Partial ring of lace. Aroma of malt, chocolate and raspberry. Medium to full body with flavors of roasted malt, raspberries and dark chocolate. The finish is chocolate-covered raspberries and malt. Pretty good all around.
