On the 10th anniversary of Mott the Lesser we harken the forebearer of imperial stout greatness, Kate the Great! Returning to its origin, the base was aged in tawny, ruby and white Port barrels. The Spring release of 2025 imbues a toothsome complexity into the black elixir. Waves of chocolate, fruit and tannic qualities cajole the palate. Embrace the LESS and make room for something GREAT.

500 ml bottle in a trade with Clarkvv. Thank you! Aroma is soft roast, mild Tawny port, berries. Some soft notes, chocolate, burnt toffee, roast malts, Black licorice / anise. Some soft ash. Not a thick a body but medium plus.
This certainly does resemble take the gray from all those years ago.
It was a nice trip down memory lane. To an era where imperial stouts were released for special occasions and not common place.

Bottle shared by Chris--thanks, CLW! Opaque, inky black, light viscosity, ring of head, trace lacing. Aroma is strong earthy toffee, mild anise, hint of tobacco. Taste strongly resembles aroma with late dark fruit contributions. Smooth, frothy texture, thin texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste.

Brewery draught 6/7/25.
Clear deep mahogany-cola. Small, light tan head.
Smoke, soy, umami, lead, black pepper. Always a wild ride with this one, on account of the wacky barrel blend. Rich malt but not excessive. Some caramel and a hint of fudge but not massive, and no booze.
Lighter bodied, with caramel, smoke, ash and raisin. Just all over the place, really. But with strong barrel warming and interesting notes for days. Lingering smoke and ash, tobacco and soy. A very, very different BA imperial than what is the mainstream today, but I love it for everything it's not (and the barrel complexity is wild).
