Pictavia (the former name of Scotland) has sweet honey and caramel notes balanced by oak and a light tart bitterness. It’s brewed with Special B, Munich, pale, and Caramel malt in addition to roasted barley and our two row blend. It’s then hopped exclusively with Northern Brewer. After fermenting on an abbey-style yeast, we age it in scotch barrels—that first held port, before scotch—for around four months.

Bottle - I find this to be pretty underrated thus far - maybe because it's balanced and a not beat-ou-over-the-head boozy barrel bomb? - moderate caramelized sugars, dried fruit, subtle spiciness - oak and vanilla arrive late, finishing with a hint of peaty scotch character - I dig it - kind of a pricey four pack, though.

The Aromas are fairly mild and nothing special caramel malt mainly with a little bit of coffee. Flavors are out of balance sweet up front with a long heavy sweet bitter finish. Body is very average if not a touch thin. Not one of Allagash's better beers.

A bit tame for a giant Scotch ale aged in Scotch barrels, heavier on fruity esters and caramel, light on the desired whisky notes. Needs peat; where’s the peat? Not smoky, not boozy, just modestly sweet with a lot of fruit. Drinkable, but could use a bit more oomph.

Pours deep, clear mahogany into a thistle. Off-white head with excellent retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Hot caramel aromas. Thick with sweet caramel upfront turning to dry oak before the lasting peat and sour earth finish.

Pour is a muddy river water brown with a small white head. Aroma is some dark fruit fig with barrel vanilla and whisky. Flavor is loads of dark fruit and molasses with a little cocoa powder and some scotch whisky and some alcohol. Scotch spends a lot of time in the barrel I don't know how much left it has to offer a beer but there is just enough here to let you know it was barrel aged. Super flavorful and boozy scotch ale.
