Pictavia (the former name of Scotland) has sweet honey and caramel notes balanced by oak and a light tart bitterness. It’s brewed with Special B, Munich, pale, and Caramel malt in addition to roasted barley and our two row blend. It’s then hopped exclusively with Northern Brewer. After fermenting on an abbey-style yeast, we age it in scotch barrels—that first held port, before scotch—for around four months.

Reviewed from notes.
Bottle to thistle.
Appearance: dark chestnut red to brown color with a two and a half fingers of off-white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: sweet wood, earthy vibes, subtle peat, honey, caramel, animal cracker sweetness, dark fruits, light whiffs of milk chocolate
Flavor: clean sweetness blending the prior noted aromas together and adding in a light Belgian sort of sugars to it; finishes earthy/peaty/woody and dark fruity
Texture: medium bodied, good as a sipper; fairly smooth along the tongue; light dryness also hits the tongue
Overall: what an odd Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy, well, I guess it works, I think I liked it and would welcome another glass of this.

Bottle: Poured a copper color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with some nice scotch notes and oak notes. Taste is also a mix of caramelized malt notes with some nice scotch notes, light warming alcohol notes with light residual sugar notes. Body is about average with good retention and some lacing. Super easy drinking with good level of complexity.

Bottle from a Lazy dog Deep copper in color with a thin off white head that persists. Rich bready toasty almost caramel like maltiness with bits of dark dried fruits. Light almost faint oaky spirit character. but it does add a nice background note. Great but highly deceptive sipper.

Bottle. Brown beer with a tan head. Caramel and light smoke aroma with light fruitiness. Caramel and light yeast flavor with light fruitiness and light whiskey. Medium bodied. Caramel and honey linger with yeast, fruitiness, and light whiskey barrel notes.

Bottle from AJ's Beer Warehouse. Lightly smoky nose, caramel, peat, chocolate. Pretty amber-orange, clear, with a thick, low head. Smoky, roasty flavor, caramel and peat, vanilla, whiskey, tannic wood. Thin and tannic. Body is disappointing. Smoky, peaty, slightly medicinal. This is quite complex and interesting, but nothing like the rich, fudge-like chewy malts I like in this style.

On the afternoon of 26th March 2019 my wife and I tried four flights (of four beers) in the centre section of the Bagby Beer Company in Oceanside, two flights of their own beers and two flights of guests. This is one of those 16 beers. Loved it, so I found and bought a bottle from O'Sheas Brewing Co, Orange County. Drank while on holiday at my daughters in Laguna Hills. What a lovely, lovely beer! Red hue to the brown body, off-white crown of foam on top. Malty aroma with caramel and toffee like esters leading the way, taste also malt forward and fairly sweet, boozy in a good way.
