The brewery was founded in 1866 and in 1950, after several takeovers and mergers, it was renamed Brasserie Artesienne. In 1985, the brewery was bought by the Saint-Arnould group and renamed the Saint-Omer brewery.
Brasserie Facon in Pont-de-Briques and Brasserie Semeuse in Lille merged with Brasserie de Saint-Omer in 1995 and the new company resulting from this merger was given the name GSA Brasseries.
In 1996 the Pecqueur family sold the brewery to the Heineken group. In 2008, Heineken decided to divest the brewery and André Pecqueur, CEO of the brewery, took over the brewery again. The brasserie de Saint-Omer thus regained its independence and returned to the Pecqueur family. With an annual production of 2 million hl in 2019, it is the largest independent brewery in France.
