Unfiltered thick brown-black body. Pretty solid Schwarzbier. Brown chocolate caramel tones. Rich, fresh, big specialty malt tones. Pretty much all you can ask for in the style. Right on.

Was just called Monk when I was there in 2012. Unfiltered orange-tan. Big, bold, sweet orange candy sugar tones like a Tripel. Not that impressive, but drinkable. Nice malt tones, almost like a big doughy bock at times.

Opaque brown black body. Creamy beige head. A pretty solid Black IPA, the orange peel and ginger meld right in. The ginger comes out more as it warms/approaches room temperature. Really complements the brown sugary chocolate tones. Medium to full bodied. Not World Class stuff, but very enjoyable.

Tap at Grumpy Troll. Unfiltered orange-tan. Creamy white head, steady. I found this to be quite enjoyable, big banana tones and a solid smoke flavor. Not unlike a Bamberg beer in its finish. Excellently sessionable, and lots of character too. Dry, bitter, soapy straw hop balance. Very nice.

Bottle 65 cl. Label reads 9,0% ABV. Pours an almost clear amber with a small off-white head. The aroma is almost entirely caramel with some alcohol showing. Hardly any detectable hop aromas. Rich, malty body, again loads of caramel. Clearly there is some bitterness, but it’s more herbal than fresh and citrusy. Reading the description I understand why! Ends bitter and alcoholic. 260713

A hazed blonde ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, rather grainy malt with grassy hops, like it was made for a kit. In mouth, a grainy malt with light British hops, so-so. On tap at Istmus Beer and Cheese Fest, Jan 19 2012.

On tap at Grumpy Troll. Hazy, cloudy orange-yellow-tan. Thin white head. Mild toasty aroma. Very citrus forward, but still a quality Wit. Orange coriander all the way. Yeasty and smooth, a pretty decent representation of the style. Nice toasty golden malt balance, almost a touch oily and wheaty. Not perfect, but decent.

On tap at Grumpy Troll. Unfiltered orange-brown. Thin beige head. Off burnt butter aroma. This one is pretty weak. Farmhouse Ale in the Spotted Cow tradition. Messy malt tones covered up with some odd citrus and honey tones. Doesn’t capture any style, just a bad mess. Off funky flavors, this a a clear miss.

Snifter at Grumpy Troll. Thick, unfiltered brown. Oily, patchy, soapy head. Pronounced sweet bourbon aroma. The bourbon completely dominates, really overwhelming. Too thin of a background beer to complement the bourbon. Smooth caramel tones, but really just a straight up bourbon beer. Mellow, mild nutty tones.

On tap at Grumpy Troll. Just put o, quite thick and cloudy, really yeasty. Thin, patchy head. Lots of fresh citrus in the aroma. Probably needs a little more carbonation. Fresh, dry hop tones and a steady yeasty golden malt body. Nice piny aftertaste, but the lack of sufficient carbonation doesn’t work so well. Unrefined, tastes like a homebrew. Chunky yeast leftovers in the bottom of the glass.
