Description
Upscale Casual Fare & Award Winning Handcrafted Beer.
When it was completed in 1871, the Hunt's Block building was a relative skyscraper among the wooden structures of West Dundee. As the decades passed, Hunt's Block grew into a location worthy of its listing on the National Register of Historic Places. It was home to a number of flourishing businesses, including Dundee's first bank, a dry goods store, doctors' and lawyers' offices, a billiard hall, a ballroom...but never a fine-dining establishment. That all changed in 1998 when Andrew and Matthew Burns and their father, Timothy, purchased Hunt's Block. They completely renovated the classic building and crafted it into a restaurant named after a man of honor and dignity, Timothy's father, Emmett Burns. Today, Hunt's Block is home to Dundee's first small brewery, where award-winning handcrafted beer and outstanding food is created and enjoyed every day. In the years since we opened we have also opened and operated two more restaurants in the historic downtowns of Downers Grove and Palatine. In 2004, Emmett's won the prestigious Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Landmarks Illinois Preservation Award for Adaptive Use for the work done on restoring Hunt's Block.

Draft pint is a little hazy, unlike most Emmetts beers. Amber color with a thin layer of foam hanging around. Smell is lightly sweetmeats with more malt than honey in my first sniff. Taste is pretty fair wheat ale character, too malty to fall into the weizen category. Honey is just a slight imprdsion, that seems to have fermented out. Some crisp, peppery noble-style hops prick at my tongue, giving this a bit of a dry bite. Kind of filling, and combines some sweet stickiness on mty lips with a hippy tingle on the inside.

Sample at Emmett’s Downers Grove. Surprisingly big tropical fruit hop nose, like some Hipster idea of an IPA. But in a wheatbeer. So it’s cool. Clear yellow body, no chance I’m this 1 oz pour to kick out a head. Taste bears out the tropical fruit of the hop nose, with crisp malt, like a 312’s big brother who’s seen a bit of the world.

Taster at Emmett’s, Downers Grove. Light gold of a Belgian pils, Since I’m nly doing a taster, it can’t work up much of a nose beyond a slightly sweet, but happ malty smell.. Taste is a bit sweet, but more from the malt. Moughfeel or texture is almost "gooey." But that’s a difference that makes it interesting.

Draft at Emmett’s Downers Grove. Clean, light amber color under a half-inch head. Smell offers cyrstal malt, and a bit of yeast, interesting considering Emmett’s usually filters heavily. Malty taste at the start, Hop notes are a bit lighter, close to the Northern Brewers of a steam beer. But in just the right level to be refreshing after the bike ride I just came in from. The yeast I thought I smelled in the nose is nowhere on the palate.

I Believe this will be found to be a rye Stout or Porter. Nice spicy nose with roasted malt beneath. Black color, thin brown head. Taste is warming with alcohol up front, emphasis from a ton, maybe nitro mouthfeel. Spicy more than hoppy, with some malt sweetness and maybe a bit of honey. Chocolate notes work themselves in Midway through my small glass. Yes, just this one is quite enough, thank you!
