Description
The Ship Inn Brewery opened in March 2008, after 9 months of converting our garage, a long held ambition of ours was realised with the opening of our very own Ship Inn Brewery! We were fortunate to secure the services of brewer Michael Hegarty and our brews of Ship Hop Ale, Sandcastles at Dawn and Dolly Day Dream were very well received.

Fourteen years on and the brewery has moved from strength to strength. The pub is now self sufficient in real ale, with beer brewed on the premises and rolled a mere 10ft from brewery to cellar. The word local has come to mean just that, and with no deliveries from other brewers we have significantly reduced our carbon footprint.

With great excitement we gained the excellent brewing skills of our head brewer Olly Eltringham!

Water is taken from the river Coquet at Warkworth, out of the tap and into the vessels. Malt from Thomas Fawcett and all the beers use the same bittering hop called ‘Arora’.

Bottle that I split at GBBF ’15, day 3, 13/08/15. Lightly hazed golden blonde with a moderate off white cap. Nose is light citric rinds, pissy tones, straw, light fart, tarte edge ... infected. Taste comprises on the turn melon, bread, straw, damp hay, citric leanings. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. So so, drinkable (just) but carrying an infection.

Bottle from the Ship Inn. Appearance - golden amber with a thin head that disappears very quickly. Gentle but steady carbonation. Nose - honey and cornflakes. Taste - more of the sweetened breakfast cereal. A little orange kick at the end. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly fresh finish, but truthfully for a lager style, and particularly a pils, this needs more hop bitterness. Overall - I’ve loaded this beer as a Pils but in reality this is closer to a Helles as bitterness is not at Pils level.

Bottle from the Ship Inn. Appearance - golden amber with not much head. Nose - oranges and cereal. Taste - marmalade on toast. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - it’s tasty. That said, all the bottled beers I’ve tasted from this brewery have a similar malt and hop profile. It’s a great recipe but makes me wonder if they have another good recipe.

Bottle from the Ship Inn. Appearance - amber to copper with a thin head. Nose - big orange and bread notes. Marmalade on toast. Taste - lovely roasty toasty hit followed by the oranges or even apricots again. Palate - despite the low ABV this is near as dammit medium bodied with a nice crunchy texture and a long dry finish. It’s got the structure of an ESB at the strength of a regular bitter. Overall - really well integrated hops and malt. Lovely little beer.
