THE UNEXAMINED BEER IS NOT WORTH BREWING
There comes a time in every man’s life when he must ask himself – Should I continue working my steady and lucrative job or should I just quit and make beer? Well, for Norfolk-native Porter Hardy, the decision was a no-brainer. In 2012, the former home-brewer (and now former lawyer) traded his ties in for tap handles, and never looked back. With a stellar team around him, Porter entered un-fermented waters as one of the original craft breweries to set up shop in Hampton Roads.

Sampled at the brewery, pours a root beer brown, ring of white head. Nose is sweet with brown sugar and tamarind, dark bread. Flavor follows, sweet and sugary, some malt, some cola. Watery finish. Nope.

Can. Orange, banana, clove, wheat malt, and straw aroma. Slightly hazy golden yellow with moderate head. Moderately sweet orange, banana, clove, wheat malt, and mildly bitter straw flavor. Okay body. Plastic aftertaste. Would have been good if not for plastic.

Can purchased from local beer store. Poured a nearly pitch black color with a huge, foamy dark tan head. Aroma was lots of roasted, dark malts. Some bitter bakers chocolate notes. Flavor was really creamy, lactose chocolate, with a decent malt finish. Had this on a 90 degree night and it was still really refreshing.

Can: Banana, lemon, and clove nose, evident but not strong. Clear amber, thin head. Lemon and wheat flavor, mild peppery coriander finish. Medium body, easy carbonation. A good attempt at the style from an American brewer.
