Commenced Brewing 2004 at Mimram Rd, Hertford as Red Squirrel Brewery. Moved in 2011 to Berkampstead Rd, Potton End after merging with a local Wine Producer. Rebranded to Mad Squirrel in February/March 2017 with some core range beers being renamed and others simply changing name from Red to Mad.

A Forward thinking, contemporary brewery based just outside of London, at the foot of the Chiltern Hills. We have continually grown and evolved, often in unexpected ways. Always with a boundless enthusiasm for quality, an inquisitive approach to flavour and a restless desire to better ourselves.

Cask gravity at St Albans BF 2007. Gold with a haze, thin bubbly beige head. Grapefruit American hop aroma. Quite a sweet grapefruit I thought. Could really do with more malt. Hops are classy. Good grapefruit. Itโ€™s an APA.

(Cask at Wenlock Arms, London, 10 Aug 2007) Black colour with frothy pale brown head. Roasted nose with distinct notes of coffee and hints of chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with coffee, chocolate and blackberries. Dry with balanced bitterness in the finish. First beer Iโ€™ve tried from this brewery, but hopefully not the last. Very nice.

I had two pints, both poured black and one had a little rocky brown head while the other had a very thick creamy one. Both looked fantastic and there was a lovely malty aroma. The taste was nice and burned with an oily hint and definite sweetness that by no means overpowered the pint and made it insipid. The alcohol gave it a nice warming note, but did not dominate the beer.

Pours a golden, slightly hazey colour with a reasonable amount of white head. Strong citric aroma and a slightly unusual taste in that thereโ€™s a bit of a metallic edge and some straw flavours. Quite nice, but not, perhaps, one of their better beers.

Cask-conditioned at the Nelson, Wheathampstead, Herts. A near black mild with reddish tones. Aroma of raisins, walnuts and roasted malt. Flavours of coffee and dates with a dry finish. Good.

Clear and deep copper coloured with a brownish tint. Thin layer of foam. Ripe fruit notes in aroma. Moderate bitter sweet flavour with a component of dark berries and malty hints behind. Rounded taste. An average English bitter (Half on gravity at The St Albans Beer Festival, 28.09.2006).

Cask at Merton Beer Festival July 7th, 8th 2006. Very dark brown in colour with dark head. Roasted and woody notes linger in this smooth easy drinking Porter finished it before thinking was that it, not bad at all but not quite hitting the mark.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 06. Black beer with ruby edges. Dark beige head. Really nice porter aroma. Good dark roast malt, but the fruit is excellent. Smooth velvety aroma. I like it, but it lacks that extra something to make it a better beer. Bit of smoke.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 06. I am sure that they were trying to make something in this style, but missed by quite a long way. Having said that though, this isnโ€™t a bad beer. Amber, bubbly off white head. Herby hop aroma.. Soft and cold in the mouth with some toffee. I quite like the harsh finish which has more toffee
