5.5% Bottle from Asahiya. Part of the Masaji Beer Project. Pine, citrus and mild funk aroma. Definitely hopped with c-hops. Smooth bitter bite at the front of the mouth with some sour puckering followed by a caramel malty base. Crisp dry pine finish. Very solid APA.

Tap at Watering Hole, Tokyo. Black colour with a small beige head. Aroma strong in chocolate syrup. Flavour of smoked malt, chocolate. Rather thin and bland. Had expected more from a 15 month matured one.

On tap at the North Island Brewpub in Sapporo. It poured a nice amber with an inch of white foam. Some cinnamon aroma and lots of cinnamon flavor. It tasted like powdered cinnamon sugar, quite sweet but nice. 430ml was a bit much to drink at once though as the sweetness got cloying. It isn’t a session ale I think.

On tap at the North Island Brewpub in Sapporo (and I had a bottle later on at home). It poured a great dark black with a good inch of tan foam. The aroma had the coriander front and center and the flavor started with the spice and ended with a roast coffee flavor. Excellent! Probably one of the best stouts I’ve had in Japan and also a fairly innovative beer, kudos!

Draught at Tenma. Pale amber color. Citru nose, oily citrus, bisctuits. Slick oily palate. Earthy citrus flavors, bread. Weird, unpleasant finish. Nice hops but a bit odd and too oily.

Draught at 1020. 14 month aged version. This name is what they are calling it at the brewery. Black with lace. Hoppy noseβ€”grass and citrus, still great character after all this time from the Nelson Sauvin dry hopping. Licorice, coffee, and berries as well, but the hops predominate. Bready flavor, like black German rye, with coffee, chocolate, and good hop flavor. Excellently integrated and complex. Delicious stuff. Completely different from the first version, so I put it in as a different beer.

med brown color. Very hoppy with nice woody malt character . As the beer warms up, it becomes a bit cloying and out of balance, but still decent.
