Description
Our story starts with Tom Reynolds‘ dream of creating Bootleg Brewery as his retirement project started in late 1992, but it wasn’t until the last months of 1993 that he managed to obtain an approved Liquor Licence to put his building plans on track. After almost a year of hard work, the brewery was finally established in 1994, having it’s official grand opening on November 23rd. He set up the brewery with the vision of crafting high-quality, handcrafted beers that reflected the unique character of the Margaret River area. The brewery was named after the illicit alcohol production during the Prohibition era, capturing a rebellious and pioneering spirit. During it’s first year, Bootleg produced over 60 different beers which were sold only at their venue, with 4 of them remaining constantly on tap as the main core range: Bitter Beer, Stout, Wheat Beer and the iconic Raging Bull.

Bottle bought in Perth. As some of the ratings below suggest, something had gone badly wrong with this brew. The appearance was a murky, dirty yellow with next to no head - truly deserving a 1. There were some sweet malts, grassy hops and a moderately bitter finish. Poor.

Bottled. A red beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has notes of fruits, red berries, roasted malt, and caramel. The flavor is very sweet with notes of caramel, fruits, and red berries, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of bluebetty. Pours a clear dark orangey brown with a dense beige head. Subtle roasty nose. Rich body, subtle roast and dark dried fruits, yeast and friendly phenols - appears almost as if a Belgian yeast was used. Somewhat biscuity. A little odd and not entirely clear.. 190412

Bottle. Not quite clear orange with a white head. Aroma has vague lemon, earth and cardboard. Taste has fairly bland sweetness and some herbal notes. I wouldn’t have guessed it was a wheat beer. Bought with other Bootleg beers that seemed very fresh. Urk.

Bottle. Cloudy orange with a large white head that collapses to an inch. High carbonation. Aroma of lemon, cloves, white pepper. Barely sweet. Wheaty but not really bready. No banana. Some wheat and lemon tang. Dry and spicy finish. Refreshing but uninvolving. No date, but clearly very fresh.

From a 330ml bottle on 14/6/2011. Pours a clear straw colour with a big head that disappears quickly. Has a slight aroma of grains and salami. There’s not much going on flavour wise - some moderate wheat notes and a touch of lemon. The carbonation is lively. All up, quite bland and disappointing.

Bottle. Amber with a beige head. Toffee aroma. Really sweet with caramel, honeyed nuts and brown sugar; struggling grassy bitterness. Not my sort of thing.
