Description
Keltek, meaning ‘Celtic’ in the Cornish language was chosen as the brewery’s name by founder and head brewer Stuart Heath. Established in 1997, our award-winning ales are brewed by hand with care and craftsmanship, using whole hop flowers and British malts. After winning gold for his very first brew, demand for his beers grew tremendously and expansion was needed. The first move was to a larger unit in Lostwithiel where the brewery’s capacity increased five-fold. In 2007 Keltek expanded again, moving to its current home in Redruth. We now have the capacity to brew over 250 brewer’s barrels a week. In addition, we have our own fully automated bottling line which filters, carbonates, fills, labels and caps the beer. Everything’s done in-house.

Keltek remains a family owned brewery that adheres to the age old traditions of brewing by hand with care and craftsmanship using the finest whole hop flowers, British malts and hand-pitched yeast.

2008: Cask at the Market Porter. A little roasted malt for aroma. Dark amber brown color with a beige head. Medium body with smooth carbonation. Starts with a great stone fruit flavor (like light, not dark), which turns into cardamom, wood, or some herb. So it finishes dry and decently bitter. But the flavor is mystifying. 2011: Bottle from a Costcutter in Penzance. Pours amber with a transient off-white head. Aroma of mildly roasted malt. Flavor is a bit malty with some citrus/fruit bitter. Pretty balance, finishing on the bitter side. There is something strange which suggests roasted marshmallow.

Bottle picked up at Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot in November. Black as black can be, too sweet but there were some dried fruits on the nose and kicking about in the flavour dept’ other than that I was somewhat dissapointed by this.

Bottle at Kook’s Leaving Do at Chris_o’s. Deep chestnut, lasting beige head. Odd aroma. Yeasty/film developer. Malt in mouth. It is a bit like a Belgian beer, bit of lemon to start, then later some choc malt, quite sharp and acidic. Not exactly nice.

Cask gravity at Battersea Beer Festival 2006. Deep copper/amber colour with disappearing head. US style hop aroma with grapefruit. Not a huge amount of malt. Citric finish. Bit of toffee, bit of smoke and overall a bit thin.

Pale amber with greenish shine, hazy; good medium-sized head, yellowish. ??? What is it with this brace of Britbeers I got? This smells pure horseblanket! BBD is about 5 months past, true. Shortlived, however, turning woody and especially grassy. Bitter taste, very good British hops-bitter; nice & refreshing. There’s some little malty sweetness underneath, and a fruity flavour, turning it into a hopped banana-orange drink - but then one I like. Light MF, but refreshing, nice fresh hopbite. Pleasing beer, bit Weizen character. I’m starting to warm to Keltek brewery, even if I dread revisiting Blue Anchor...

Black with brownish shine, totally opaque; slim, slightly irregular but rather dense brown head. Sourish-lactic nose, Flemish brown-like, superimposed on the classical chocolate cake. Whew -taste! Bitter, sweet and sour at the same time - some jumble. Flavours of smoked/cigar ash, bitter chocolate, fruit acids, lactic, berries, grapes and sweet cake. Very full-bodied, chewy. Aftertaste is acid-etched sweetness. Extremely likeable and dangreously drinkable for its ABV. Searched long after this -well worth the waiting. Thanks to MatW!
