Description
Keltek, meaning ‘Celtic’ in the Cornish language was chosen as the brewery’s name by founder and head brewer Stuart Heath. Established in 1997, our award-winning ales are brewed by hand with care and craftsmanship, using whole hop flowers and British malts. After winning gold for his very first brew, demand for his beers grew tremendously and expansion was needed. The first move was to a larger unit in Lostwithiel where the brewery’s capacity increased five-fold. In 2007 Keltek expanded again, moving to its current home in Redruth. We now have the capacity to brew over 250 brewer’s barrels a week. In addition, we have our own fully automated bottling line which filters, carbonates, fills, labels and caps the beer. Everything’s done in-house.

Keltek remains a family owned brewery that adheres to the age old traditions of brewing by hand with care and craftsmanship using the finest whole hop flowers, British malts and hand-pitched yeast.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear amber gold with a thin white head. Aromas of butter biscuit, honeycomb, faint lemon. Taste is malt loaf, mixed peel, cake mix, buttery. Buttery finish too. Not great.

50cl bottle from Tesco, Camberley. A golden amber pour with a tight cream head; rich malty aroma; a thick, buttery, caramel, malt taste; but with the alcohol very obvious in the finish, despite the relatively low ABV. I’m not impressed.

Half pint, hand-pulled cask at Crown Inn, Stockport. Cloudy red-brown coloured body under a remaining creamy off-white head. Bread, apricot and herbal hops on the nose. Toffee, dried fruits and bread to the taste buds. A tad too sweet to the ending, otherwise rather satisfying (03.02.2015).

Bottle from ASDA. Golden in colour, with a thin, white, head. Sweet, maize and peardrop aroma, with a touch of tired hop. Malty and lager like in flavour with not much of a finish. Not so good.

Clear amber brown colour, small foamy off-white head, dissipates quickly, minimal lacing. Strong aroma, toasted malts, honey, dark fruits, brown sugar. Taste medium to heavy sweet, light bitter, toffee, caramel. Full body, oily to sticky texture, bit tingly on the tongue, average carbonation. Finish mild sweet, roasty, slightly bitter, raisins, some alcohol, overall a decent strong ale.

Bottle from the brewer’s own stand at the Good Food Show at Birmingham NEC. Ruby coloured. Really fruity this one- plums and raisins and Christmas cake- backed up with good toffee malts. Heady alcohol is pretty well integrated into it. It’s sweet (but not overly so), potent and warming, reminiscent of a nice barley wine. I like it.

Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. Copper coloured with a sugary sweet toffee nose and a small creamy head. It certainly doesn’t feel its strength with a fairly bland taste but a smoothish texture.
