Description
Located on the Marcle Ridge, Herefordshire's heartland of cider and perry making, Lyne Down grows 30 different cider apples and perry pears.
Ian Marshall and Sabine Darrall bought The Cider Barn in July 2015. Although not setting out to purchase a cider business, we quickly discovered the history of the land and orchard.
The traditional mixed orchard had been previously been planted by the late Jean Nowell. Jean had been instrumental in promoting cider and perry and had been a mentor to many well know local producers.
We are a small family business and at busy times of the year like harvest time we all have to lend a hand to get the apples picked and pressed. During harvest time Joe can usually be found on his hands and knees sorting and picking apples whilst Ian assumes a managerial role!

Bottle, 75cl, courtesy of fonefan. A clear, dark golden cider, still and headless. The aroma has an initial touch of garbage, but it’s the apples that do most of the work. Some cellar like notes. It’s quite dry and astringent, medium bodied. Apples in the flavor, some lemony notes. Lasting finish with apples. A nice one, dry and tasteful, but the aroma wasn’t very good at first. Didn’t deduct points for that. 110319

bottle-conditioned, bought at the farm. Slightly hazy pale yellow colour. Sweet pear-lke nose with some acidity. Very fruity with a shy tart character to balance the sweetness. A well-balanced perry, neither too sweet nor too dry.

750ml bottle from Phoenix Fine Drinks, Gloucester. Golden in colour with moderate carbonation. Funky, yeast aroma with some underlying medium dry apple juice. Surpisingly light mouth feel, with flavours of semi-tart apple juice, a savoury almost mushroom like edge and medium dry finish. Good.

From a 750ml bottle. Amber coloured with no carbonation. Pleasant apple juice aroma, with a hint of tartness, wood and spirit. Flavour started with more fruit, before some dryness in the finish and a warming, whisky aftertaste. Enjoyable.
