About
Established in 2006, with a 3 vessel 30 bbl brewery originally capable of making over 5,000 bbls (now upwards of 15,000 bbls) of beer each year, the new brewing company set about shaking up the craft brewing world with two distinct beer lines: the aggressive San Diego / West Coast styles under the Port Brewing label, and a Belgian-inspired series carrying the “Lost Abbey” name.

Today Port Brewing continues at the vanguard of craft brewing, ranked as one of the top 10 new breweries in the nation by both industry experts and enthusiasts alike, driven in large part by its extraordinary Lost Abbey beers and a library of 1000+ plus oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels that comprise one of the most remarkable barrel-aging programs for a craft brewery of any size.

Hazy dull beige. Assertive hop, vague but with hints of peach, lemon and mandarin. Juicy, peachy hop-loaded brew. Light pale malt character, but with loads of miscellaneous tropical fruit, citrus and honey. Smooth, with a bit of a late alcohol splash.

Fully hazy orange-amber. Slight orangey rim of head. Nose, well, hops. Guess!! but also a smell of apple and even more specific golden apple peel. Bitter taste. Imagine. The balance malt-hops is gone, but not the 'inner-hops' balance. Mouthfeel is very thick. The malt wants to be felt at one point; bit oily. Only Tomme would be capable of getting this right. It's lopsided enough, but a lopsided once in a while doesn't hurt.

GABF 2002: Perhaps the hoppiest experience I've ever had. Cloudy orange amber. Intense grassy resiny hop aroma. Strong grassy piney hop flavor. Strong bitter finish. Almost unbalanced and astringent with grassy hops. Did I say intense hop aromatics?

Pretty much hop juice. A hint of malt gives it a little balance, but it really isn't about balance. A fun beer, mind you, but these Cali IPAs need to mellow out a bit.
