2006 bottle from MrWalker consumed on 8/12/06 with Duff and SuIIy.
Bright tones of blood orange are mixed in with a strong pink-violet coloring, creating quite the unique color. When not held to the light, the beer takes on a more darkly purple color. Off-white head with a flourish of beige is not long retained, but does leave a filmy lacing like residue behind as it recedes. Unfiltered, bottle conditioned, hazy, etc...
Dry nose, of course, full of fruity and yeasty nuances, but with a strong grape presence, heavy, and very full bodied, seems more to me like an old zinfandel or cabernet than it does a pinot noir. Soft wood notes help to combat the heavy, fruity, wine-like presence, as does the typical Cantillon sour yeast. Bit of leafy, vegetal notes break through, and some black pepper phenol notes spice things up in response. Furthermore, the aroma is of exceptional strength, fully sniffable to infinity.
Sour yeastiness fails to break through, fully, the heavy wine character/flavor. The chalky-thick character and heavy, full flavor characteristic of zins and pinots is here present. Fortunately, the yeast sourness builds up on the end, helping to brighten things somewhat, but it’s an uphill battle, in my mind. Currants, piquant grapes, dark berry jam and a chalky mouthfeel all seem to confuse. Is this a bright, vibrant, fruity lambic, with some dullish wine notes? Or is this a full-bodied, sparkling wine, with a funky yeast sourness. I guess it’s the best of both worlds, but to me, with every sip, I keep trying to "dodge" the wine flavors and trying to get to the Cantillon character that I love. Maybe that’s just my lack of appreciation of wine, but it just seemed too much for me, in the grape department. I would rather have it wine barrel aged (St. Lamvinus). Good acidity, just too full for me. Like the Imperial Stout of lambics. I did detect a bit of alcohol warmth, as well.
Anyways, the beer seems much too young and I’m sorry I opened the bottle already.
