'Grape peel sour' in this series, tasted at Bierkoning in Amsterdam during this year’s Carnivale Brettanomyces event. Thanks Craftmember for sharing. Very loose, egg-white, bubbly, open, unstable head on a hazy straw-golden blonde beer. Aroma of bergamot, grape skins, green tea, old dry sherry, lemon zest, white bread slices, sour yoghurt, lime. Fruity onset, sour with more soft lactic sourness than sharp fruit acidity, unsweet raw pineapple and even cucumber aspects more than grape flavour, which is hardly there due to the fact that indeed only the pressed skinds and not the juice have been used (!); medium fizz, slick wheaty body, bit thinnish. The raw cucumber and yoghurty lactic sourness continue well into the finish, which ends dryingly sour, clean and rounded, with a certain green tea-like note to it. Like that bizarre plum version, interesting, but clearly these guys have no clue and just ‘tried something’ because spontaneous and mixed fermentation is all the hype right now – with results that can go either way. In this case, the result is more enjoyable than in the plum version (Kriecherl), but I still find it weird to use only grape skins, thus deliberately avoiding the juicy sweet-and-tartness grape flesh can add to a sour beer... Very weird project, this Austrian Alefried, but weird enough to come up with something truly remarkably one day, I think.

Sour fruit ale made by a new Austrian project, this one with plum; tasted from a bottle at Bierkoning in Amsterdam during Carnivale Brettanomyces. Snow white, open, mousy ring, cognac-tinged near-clear amber colour. Weird aroma of rosehip tea, tomateo peel, yoghurt, lemon juice, freshly cut cucumber, oxidized dry sherry, apple peel, sourdough. Sour onset, lemony-acidic, redcurrant, but actual plum flavour hardly recognizable, if at all; I get more a sour, unripe tomato-like impression, embedded in spritzy carbonation on a smooth, thinnish cereally basis and dried by ongoing lemony acidity, though nowhere overly harsh. Plum peel tannic notes at the back, tad powdery and seemingly oxidized, with this green tomato effect and rosehip aspects lingering. Interesting sour, but weird and demanding; plum flavour hardly comes across, which I think could not have been the intention to begin with.

Bottle at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Golden a bit unfiltered, persistent white foam. Aroma smells of herbs a bit, Mediterranean herbs, grains. Mouth is sessionable, hay, herbs (origano). Peculiar and tasty.

Bottle at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Amber clear pour with orange highlights, no foam. Nose: black prunes, dried prunes aroma. Terrific! Mouth: it tastes a bit peculiar, fermented prunes, souring overal with the usual peppery hidden finish.

Bottle at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Hazy yellow color with a white persistent foam. Nose: a bit of a stable aroma which I like, cellar, macerated grapes (rotten). Mouth: soft mouthfeel, balanced carbonation, thin sour with a frizzy peppery finish. Lovely.
