Description
Kiwi brewer Chris O'Leary launched Hawke's Bay's Limburg Brewing Company in 1999. Having previously brewed for four years at Roosters Brewhouse in Hastings, Chris named his brewery Limburg after the Dutch province that is the home of his wife's family. The name was also significant because the province borders both Belgium and Germany, whose beer styles were Chris' major brewing influences. His first three beers were Belgian and German-style wheat beers.

In 2003 Chris received perhaps his ultimate accolade when the late English "beer hunter", Michael Jackson, selected Limburg Witbier for distribution to members of his exclusive US-based mail order beer club.

Sadly Limburg ran into financial difficulties and the Hawke's Bay brewery was sold, the last bottles disappearing from the shelves in late 2008.

(Bottle 64 cl) Pours a clear reddish brown with a creamy, beige head. Sweetish aroma of hard roasted malt and vanilla. Medium body with sweetish hard roasted malt and vanilla accents. The finish is dry with a hint of bitterness from the malts. Much better than what could be expected from reading previous ratings. 100908

1999 Vintage. Dark brown color, burnt raisins, molasses, chocolate, wheat nose. Intense, full rich body with brown sugar, burnt raisins, wheat chocolate. Lingering burnt raisin finish. Very intense. This is the only Wiezen^bock that is better than Aventinus. This is truely a world class beer, but they don’t make it any more.

Draught at Rosie O’Grady’s, Napier. Cloudy pale amber, creamy head. Orangey nose. Sweet, fruity and yeasty with notes of melon and clean mouthfeel. There’s not estery bananaish Weihenstephaner yeast character, rather witbier like curacao falvour. Orange jam dominates thie finish. Not the best offering from Limburg.

Draught at Governors Inn, Napier. Deep ruby, clear. Raisiny, roasty malt character. Medium sweet with rounded mouthfeel. There are lots of interesting fruity, toasty, caramelly malt flavour, but less hop flavours. Medium bitterness.
