Bottle at PIB, pours black with a small tan / brown head. Aroma brings out heavy roasted malt upfront, with some dry cocoa powder further back. Flavour is rich and robust, with loads of roasted malt, followed by some espresso and maybe a touch of unsweetened cocoa powder. Highly roasted, exactly how I like my impies. Excellent beer.

On tap at PIB, pours a cloudy dark brown with small tan head. Aroma brings out lots of Belgian yeast upfront, not a whole lot else. Flavour is a bit herbal, with notes of toasted nuts, skunky herbal notes and light Belgian yeast. Not the most complex, but decently enough balanced and drinkable. Meh.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a deep black color with a medium creamy brown head. A big nose of smoke, roasted malts, some licorice. Big cocoa flavors, dark chocolates, some cherries, vanilla beans. Very nice beer. Smooth. Fairly big and not too sweet.

On tap at the brewery in Beaverton. Pours a dark copper color with a small white head. A sweet yeasty and fruity nose, bananas. The flavor is big bananas esters, dry edges, a bit of robust sugary malts, very traditional and to style. Good.

Glass at the brewery. Pours a pure black color with a medium brown head. A big fruity, oaky and dark chocolate nose. The flavor is licorice, clear red wine, vinous, robust dark roasted malts, berries, a bit of smoke. I like this more than the non-BA version slightly. It’s very good.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear golden hue with a medium white head. The aroma is light smoke, some floral hops, a bit of caramel. The flavor is light sweet toffee and an overall dry malt profile, smoke, sweet fruity hops. A pretty nice beer, very drinkable. Smoky but not overly so.
