Draught at Popeye, Tokyo. Almost black. Earthy coffee aroma. Sweetish with some licorice and tobacco as well as butter. Dense with solid body and nicely rounded mouthfeel. Heavily roasty salty finish. A well made mild and pleasant stout.

Draught at Popeye, Tokyo. Cloudy pale golden, small creamy head. Citric nose with vanilla and coriander. Rouned and drinkable, edgeless and refreshing with some surprising late bitterness.

Draught at Ushi-Tora, Tokyo. Hazy brownish amber, no head. Salty woody nose. Fairly sweet with dense full body. Well rounded and elegant with a flavour reminiscent f mature plum wine. Warming with growing late bitterness. Complex and full flavoured.

Caramel brown in color with a wispy head. Malty, sweet, dark fruits, hops, oranges, and alcohol in the aroma. Syrupy thick body. Flavor is of deep fruit, thick caramel malts, cherries, honey, chocolate, toasted malts, with light wood. Pretty hoppy, as well. Finish is bitter and dry with plenty of alcohol. Whoa, a damn fine barley wine.

Copper in color with a thin white head. Lemon citrus aroma with fresh fruits, and sweet malts. Flavor is along the same lines with the lemon much more subdued. Crisp citrus and nice malts. No indication of the 7% alcohol. Seemed very fresh. Resin hop feel on the medium body. Quality, easily session-able IPA. (Draught at Thrash Zone)

Bottle from Yamaoka. Medium gold color with an orange tint, cloudy, medium head. Tangy, slightly bitter aroma, citrus, oranges, banana, spices. Clean, slightly hoppy. Tangy, citrus flavor with bananas and spice. Light and spritzy. Orange. Somewhere between a Bavarian weizen and a Belgian Wit, but without any additives. Interesting and refreshing. Crisp and clean, but without being too sweet or too spicy. Very naturally good. If there is a weakness, it is lacking in malt a bit, and slightly astringent in the finish.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Medium brown with orange, lowish head. Cloudy. Aroma of chocolate, banana, spice; medium richenss. Rich malt flavor, lots of chocolate, some caramel, bananas. Slightly sweet but rather well balanced with a bit of sour. Full palate, relatively heavy. Well made dunkel weizen--not spectacular, but nice.

2007 version, bottle. Dark brown with a reddish-orange tint, high, foamy off-white head. Very fruity, hoppy aroma, with dark fruits, a good amount of sweetness, port, and strong malt. But hops predominate like in a Bigfoot. Very appealing aroma. Very sweet flavor, fruity, cherries, caramel, honey, alcohol heat. Good hops for bittering and aroma. Great balance. Very complex and interesting, and a great, dry finish of hops, rich malt, sweet, and heat. A very nicely done barley wine. This has perfect body and carbonation. Really well done. A treat. Best BW I’ve had from Japan.

I think this is Oze no yukidoke Kuro. I would call it a stout as well, although I’m not sure they actually claim it is one. At any rate, it strays a bit from the traditional style. I have heard they use wheat malt, but I haven’t verified it. It tastes like it. Bottle from Yamaoka in Kyoto. Slighltly burnt, bitter roasted aroma, with chocolate, some coffee, nuts, some sour, citrus hops. Pitch black with a thin lacey head. Roasted, coffee flavor, with chocolate, rich malt, something wheat-like, a touch of sour, creamy. Rather light, think palate, with a bitter, roasted coffee finish. A very interesting stout, tasty and somewhat complex, a bit light and tastes as if there is some wheat in there.

Draught at the Ichinoseki Beer Festival. Fabulous citrus hop flavor and aroma, with lots of grapefruit. Light but very sufficient malts backing it up. This is a light, peppery, citrus bomb. Magnificent. Bottle from Yamaoka in Kyoto. 8/3/6/4/15 A very pleasant, bitter, fragrant, piney, citrus hop aroma. cloudy, medium copper color with almost no head at all. Very hoppy, fragrant, floral and bitter flavor, with a nice underlying caramel malt character, but it doesn’t keep up with the hops. Great pine, citrus, grass. Needs more malt and more alcohol! Good, crisp mouthfeel and bitter, long finish make it very nice, but I would notch up the malt a few steps.
